Goreangab Mall a symbol of Katutura’s economic rise – president

President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah on Friday described the newly opened Goreangab Mall in Katutura as a symbol of economic transformation, opportunity and confidence in the future of Namibians.

She said the development goes beyond retail infrastructure and represents progress in reversing the legacy of apartheid-era exclusion that saw black Namibians forcibly relocated to Katutura.

“Katutura was once a symbol of division, but today it stands as a centre of resilience, progress and economic activity,” she said.

The president said the mall reflects growing private sector confidence in Katutura and Goreangab, areas that have become attractive investment destinations due to their expanding population and economic potential.

She revealed that about 300 jobs were created during the construction phase, while the completed mall is expected to sustain nearly 400 permanent jobs. The mall has over 40 stores.

Nandi-Ndaitwah said the facility will improve access to essential services, including banking, pharmacies and restaurants, reducing transport costs and saving time for residents.

She also challenged local entrepreneurs, particularly youth and food market operators, to ensure fresh produce sold at the mall is sourced locally.

The president called for stronger partnerships between farmers, retailers and shopping centres through concrete offtake agreements to boost local production, create jobs and strengthen food security.

She praised the collaboration between Safland Property Group and Oryx Properties, saying their investment demonstrates confidence in the purchasing power and economic potential of Katutura residents.

Nandi-Ndaitwah urged the community to protect and support the mall as a shared asset for future generations.
