After more than 25 years in Windhoek’s city centre, Goethe-Institut Namibia will be moving from its Fidel Castro Street location.

Beloved as a hub of arts, music, exhibitions, dialogue, literature, cultural exchange and German language learning, Goethe-Institut will be hosting a celebration to bid farewell to the space on Saturday.

Entrance to the event is free and the celebration will feature a programme of family friendly activities from 10h00, as well as a concert evening with The Yesterdaye, Steven Afrikaner and DJ Alba Nvlo beginning at 17h00.

“Years ago, this house changed into a space of connection and creativity, education and togetherness, a bridge between cultures,” says Goethe-Institut Namibia director Dennis Schroeder in a press release. “Above all, we formed a place for everyone to meet, to learn, to grow – through language, art and dialogue.”

The spirit of the space will live on at Goethe-Institut Namibia’s final location and new home at DELK Windhoek Gemeindezentrum. The site is currently being renovated and the Goethe-Institut will have its grand opening in 2026.

In a press statement, Schroeder says “the journey will continue in a new and larger home with fresh ideas and a renewed sense of purpose”.

Meanwhile, the cultural institute will be closed to the public from 15 September and will resume operations at an interim location on Windhoek’s Simeon Shixungileni Street from 1 October.

But first, this Saturday’s farewell.

The daytime programme includes a mural painting, a book market, drumming circle, planetarium, jumping castle, photo booth, storytelling, robotic trials, a virtual reality experience, as well as free coffee and cake. The Goethe Café will also be open for refreshments.

By night, the Goethe-Institute will become a place of music, akin to its popular ‘Night Under the Stars’. The Yesterdaye will take the stage at 17h00.

The farewell programme runs from 10h00 to 22h00. Find the full schedule of events on Goethe-Institut Namibia’s social media. Patrons can follow Goethe-Institut Namibia on Instagram for updates on the move and upcoming events.
