Godzilla vs Kong is City-obliterating Spectacle

The tussle of the Titans reaches peak CGI glory in ‘Godzilla vs Kong’ (2021).

Directed by Adam Wingard, who focuses on the creature clashes while the plot plays poorly in the star-studded background, the fourth film from Legendary’s MonsterVerse is a city-obliterating, escapist action picture for fans of the franchise.

Set after the events of ‘Godzilla: King of the Monsters’ (2019) and ‘Kong: Skull Island’ (2017), the film presents Apex Cybernetics’ misguided mission to help humans become the apex predator. Intent on ridding the world of the Titans through a mixture of technology and a power source found in their home of Hollow Earth, Apex Cybernetics’ Walter Simmons creates a monster to rival both Kong and Godzilla, who initially senses the new predator and attacks Simmons’ facility.

Though Kong just wants to chill at home, he gets sucked into the drama which features a podcaster, two meddling kids and a Hollow Earth expedition gone awry.

Starring Alexander Skarsgård, Millie Bobby Brown, Brian Tyree Henry, Julian Dennison, Rebecca Hall and Demián Bichir, ‘Godzilla vs Kong’ is full of stars largely overshadowed by Kong, who provides the film’s emotional core through his relationship with Skull Island’s sole Iwi survivor Jia (Kaylee Hottle), who is deaf and communicates with the Titan via sign language.

Satisfying in terms of spectacle and ultimately a film for those unbothered by the invisible carnage of two warring Titans making confetti of Hong Kong, ‘Godzilla vs Kong’ is worth a watch on a screen as big as its central stars.
