The first leg of the go-karting national championship saw good sportsmanship between racers at the Tony Rust Race Track this past weekend.
Speaking to Cecil Koorts (sr) about the event, the highlights and the road ahead for the rest of the 2025 season, he says the team’s enthusiasm and high sportsmanship was tangible throughout the races.
Though it is the first race for 2025, riders like Cecil Koorts (jr) used the event for his participation on the international arena. He will soon depart to South Africa (SA), and later this year to Europe, Koorts (sr) says.
Despite the hot weather, the event saw 36 entries in seven different categories, marking a good start, Koorts (sr) told Top Revs.
As is typical in motorsport, there were two minor incidents, including one vehicle rollover. Fortunately, both riders, Tony Rust and Gury dos Santos, walked away unharmed due to the stringent safety regulations enforced by international and local motorsport federations.
Riders in the Mini Rok class showed good competition between them, especially with the exciting return of the Botha sisters, Milla and Milko.
The Mini Max class saw the most entries with eight racers, of which only one rider did not finish due to mechanical issues.
“In this class, the competition was tight, we saw good competition,” Koorts (sr) says.
The average laps per heat is 15 rounds and that needs concentration, determination and physical and mental fitness.
Each rider has to complete 45 laps. Koorts (jr) participated in two classes, racing 90 competition laps in preparation for his international races. Including qualifying laps, he completed a total of 105 laps.
Cema Racing, under whose flag Koorts (jr) raced, is already preparing for the next event in SA, where he will race in Cape Town on 4 and 5 April.
With hardly any rest, he will also be in action again on local soil at the Tony Rust Race Track during the weekend of 11 April.
Like any sport, sponsors play a role in hosting and in the development of the sport, with Momentum Insurance and Hardcore Logistics as the main sponsors of the event.
The event was organised by the Windhoek Motor Club and endorsed by the Namibia Motorsport Federation.
The results are as follows:
Rok class: first place Koorts (jr), second Herman Schouw and in third place Kristopher Koudelka.
Bambino class: first place Zian Nel, Rocco van Eeden second and third Willem Retief.
