Go and register – Nujoma

FORMER President Sam Nujoma has urged all eligible voters to register for the upcoming national elections in order to enhance democracy in the country.

Speaking at the Suiderhof Primary School where he had gone to register as a voter in the upcoming elections, Nujoma said:

“I call on all Namibians, patriotic citizens, to register and receive their voters’ cards, so they can participate in the upcoming national elections” he said. Nujoma, who was accompanied by his wife Kovambo, said only the voters cards will enable the people to exercise their democratic rights to vote as citizens for the country.

Meanwhile, the director of elections, Paul Isaack, said the Electoral Commission of Namibia has registered 500 000 voters over the past 16 days since registration started.

Of this number, 1 500 Namibians registered with the country’s foreign missions, most of which are in Cape Town.

Isaack said he is confident that with the 28 days left, they will reach their goal of registering all eligible Namibian voters.

He also said they have overcome the teething problems that were being experienced with the use of the voters’ registration kit.

“The whole process is going very smoothly now. However, when it rains, this complicates the whole registration process for those using tents,” he said.

Isaack appealed to schools near registration points to accommodate registration officials.

The registration exercise is set to continue until 2 March.
