Furnmart employees end strike with two-year salary increment deal

Furnmart and Home Corp Namibia employees ended their strike after the company committed to a two-year deal to increase their salaries by 5% and N$300 per month.

Over 467 employees countrywide embarked on a stay-away strike last Monday after the company and the Metal and Allied Namibian Workers Union (Manwu) reached a deadlock on salary increments and housing allowance terms.

The workers demanded a salary increment of 8% and a housing allowance of N$500.

However, the strike that lasted for almost two weeks came to an end after the company and Manwu on Thursday signed an agreement effective 1 January 2026 to 31 December 2027.

The agreement seen by The Namibian says for these two years employees earning more than N$6 000 will get a salary increment of 5% and those earning less than N$6 000 will get N$300.

“Back pay for January, February, March, April, May and June of 2026 will be made along with the normal pay run for the month of July. The wage agreement for the first year will be effective as of 2 July, while the wage agreement for the second year will be effective 1 January 2027,” the agreement says.

It further states that the employees are allowed to take one paid day off every month during the week to run their personal errands that would require attendance during normal business hours.

“The date of such an off-date must be agreed upon in advance with the employer while taking into account the operational requirements of the business. This agreement is non-cumulative; hence, it may not be carried over to a subsequent month. The general assistants and drivers will be provided with one pair of safety boots free of charge every two years,” the agreement says.

The two parties also agreed that the wage negotiations for 2028 shall commence in August of 2027.
