Fishrot suspects charged for smuggling phones

TWO of the accused in the Fishrot scandal, James Hatuikulipi and Pius Mwatelulo, have been charged for allegedly smuggling cellphones into their prison cells.

This was confirmed by deputy commissioner Abner Agas who said the incident happened on 29 March 2020.

He said the accused wanted to maintain contact with the outside world in contravention of the Namibia Correctional Services Act number 9 of 2012.

Agas told that the Act prohibits bringing in cellphones to a facility where one is lawfully detained.

The two will appear in absentia in the magistrate’s court in Katutura on Wednesday but The Namibian understands the case will be moved to a later date.
