Fasie Kay ushers in summer with ‘Mutima’

MORE and more new artists are popping up in Namibia and we absolutely love seeing it happening. It’s also great whenthey provide us something a little different – some fun to get us off our feet.

That is what Fasie Kay has done with his first track ‘Mutima’ which showcases powerful vocals that jump right out at the

first listen. His range is also quite apparent, as he fills the song with a variety of vocal styles.

“It expresses how I felt a lot of pain and hurt, seeing so many people in the world with no humanity and the increasing

rates of suicide and gender-based violence. It drove me to write a song which speaks to what I believe in, which is taking

care of each other,” says Fasie Kay, whose real name is Ngajozikue Karutjaiva.

What ‘Omutima’, which means ‘heart’ in Otjiherero, represents is love, says Fasie Kay. When you are taking care of

someone’s heart, you’re taking care of someone’s love, he says. For him this song was a way of telling people to take

good care of each other’s hearts.

The young talent has been signed to Okinikini Records, a newly formed music label owned by famed Namibian artist

Big Ben, who also serves as a mentor and producer, though the 21-year-old creative writes and performs all of his songs.

There is a certain international feel to ‘Mutima’. The mood and the energy are more lively than the lyrics would suggest,

and it feels the perfect song to play at a day market or a sunny outdoor event.

According to Big Ben, the music that Fasie Kay makes is a reflection of what he listened to growing up.

“It’s a mix of folk-pop, Afro-pop, Afro-beat and fusion genres with a strong presence of tribal rhythms. His music is

inspired by musicians like Passenger and Ed Sheeran, and he creates music to touch the hearts of people and music that

people can listen to and relate to.”

The influence of his mentor is clear as well, embodying that similar blend of African traditional sounds, Western pop

vibes and vocals that can’t be stopped.

Fasi Kay’s voice and writing ability are quite mature, for someone who has not spent a lot of time recording and

releasing tracks. Based on his first official offering, we are sure the artist has a lot more in store for us.

The song is currently available to download for free at okinikini.com and elsewhere online. Follow the vocalist
