Fashion Designer Ventures into YouTube Podcast

Pinehas NakazikoFashion designer Christ Lao, popularly known as Lao, who founded Lao Glam Designs, has ventured into a YouTube channel titled ‘Nam Podcast with Lao’, in which she interviews local celebrities.

Lao recently made waves on social media because of her YouTube Podcast, in which she interviews musicians, models, designers, and people from all walks of life.

She describes her channel as a safe space where people can come together to educate, inform and unleash anything and everything without limits.

Asked why she came up with the podcast, Lao says: “We never have YouTube podcasts in Namibia.” She adds that she feels arts in Namibia need such platforms for local personalities to air their stories, and people can have access to it any day and any time, especially during a time that has taken a toll on almost everyone’s mental health.

She also says YouTube is not like television in the sense that YouTube or podcasts can be accessed any day, any time, and one does not necessarily have to sit to watch it. “They can listen to it while doing other chores,” explains Lao.

Starting her channel, she faced a lot of challenges from fellow Namibians who are not well introduced to podcasts, let alone YouTube. “It requires a lot of marketing trying to make people understand the whole concept.”

So far, Lao has worked with different people such as Voster and Wizblack, queer activist Jay Aeron, fashion designer Wilma K, singer, songwriter and producer Vikta Juice Boy, Makilla the Rapper, K Dio, Kangweson and many more.

“I am looking forward to sitting with bigger artists like Exit and many others,” says Lao.

Lao is a fashion designer who studied clothing production at the Namibian Institute of Mining and Technology (Nimt). She recently completed her studies in electrical engineering at the College Of Cape Town.

“Fellow Namibians should support Namibian YouTubers. We are a small community and need support by watching our videos, subscribing and sharing our channels,” says Lao.
