The festival will take place every Wednesday over an extended period of two months.

Organised jointly with the embassies of Finland, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Germany, France, Belgium/Netherlands, the festival will screen several award-winning European and Namibian films, and will be hosted under the theme: ‘Youth in Diversity: Our Shared Roots for a Better Tomorrow’.

In her speech, EU ambassador Sinikka Antila expressed her excitement about hosting the festival.

“We are proud to host the EU Film Festival Namibia this year, following a successful festival held last year. The 2022 EU Film Festival will screen a total of 18 films, nine feature films and nine local short films.

“Entrance to the festival is free of charge,” she says.

Antila says the objective of the festival is to raise interest and awareness, and educate local audiences about European and Namibian films, as well as strengthening cooperation and communication between the EU and the Namibian public, and local partners.

“The festival is a result of good cooperation with local stakeholders, strengthening their capacity through training targeting upcoming and existing film-makers. Apart from the film screening, the festival will present a four-day video production workshop at Keetmanshoop from 11 to 14 October.

“Our hope is that the European cinematic experience will be enriching for our audiences, inspirational and ignite energy and innovativeness in these often challenging times we find ourselves in,” she says.

‘Untold African Stories’ director, Alex Tackie also expressed his excitement about the upcoming EU Film Festival.

“I am so happy about the film festival, which will showcase our talent. We cannot wait to show you our film as we celebrate youth in diversity.”
