Erongo governor Neville Andre has announced plans for the region’s memorial activities to honour late founding president Sam Nujoma.
A committee made up of members of the public and private sector will be working together to this end.
Andre highlights the deep connection the region has to the founding father.
“Nujoma’s connection to the Erongo region is deeply personal and historic. It was at Walvis Bay where he enhanced his political education, before moving to Windhoek and eventually into exile to fight for Namibia’s independence. After independence, Nujoma chose to reside at Walvis Bay and Henties Bay, making this region a special place in his heart and in the history of our nation,” Andre says.
“It is therefore both an honour and a solemn responsibility for us in the Erongo region to bid our final farewell to this great son of this world.”
The memorial plans will include a variety of activities culminating in a memorial service at Kuisebmond Stadium on Tuesday, 25 February at 14h00.
“We urge all residents to be at the stadium to pay their last respects. Equally, we call on employers to allow their employees to attend this regional memorial service, and if possible, also to arrange transport for them to attend this memorial service,” Andre says.
The proceedings will further include a maritime industry memorial, the construction of a Nujoma statue and various memorial services held by schools. Constituencies will host their own memorial events and a joint non-denominational church service will be held at Hosianna Lutheran Parish, Kuisebmond, on Sunday, 23 February at 15h00.
Andre concluded his announcement by signing a book of condolences for the family. Similar books will be available for the public to sign at constituency offices and municipalities.
