The environment ministry has urged Namibians to exercise caution following reports of two escaped lions – one spotted between Tsumeb and Oshivelo in the Oshikoto region and another at Oromowa, on the western periphery of Etosha National Park.
The warning comes after a traveller heading to Tsumeb reported a lion sighting on social media.
In a media statement on Saturday, Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism spokesperson Romeo Muyunda confirmed that officials had responded to the reported sightings.
“The ministry has received reports of two separate lion incidents this morning, 1 February. A female lion was spotted between Tsumeb and Oshivelo. Ministry officials responded and, through tracking, established that the lion is part of a pride consisting of two adult lions and four cubs at Onguma farm,” he said.
Muyunda said one female lion had strayed from the farm and was captured on video by travellers.
He said officials have since tracked its spoor to Punyu farm.
“The areas where the lion has been observed are primarily private commercial farms, which reduces the risk of human encounters,” he said.
Muyunda advised farmers in the area to remain vigilant.
“We encourage farmers to take precautions and safeguard themselves and their livestock while our officials continue tracking the lion to ensure its safe return to Onguma.
“Likewise, communities near these farms are urged to remain cautious and report any sightings to the ministry,” he said.
He added that no livestock losses, damage or attacks on humans have been reported in any of the incidents.
