WORKS and Transport Minister Erkki Nghimtina last week officiated at the groundbreaking ceremony for a new NaTIS vehicle and driver testing centre at Eenhana in the Ohangwena Region.
In 2002, Cabinet approved the establishment of 21 such centres across the country. So far, centres have been established at Ongwediva, Rundu, Katima Mulilo and Lüderitz, Nghimtina said.He said the construction of the Eenhana testing centre will start now and the construction of centres at Outapi, Opuwo and Oranjemund will follow in the next three years. At the same time, he said, other existing centres will be upgraded to bring them up to required standard. Nghimtina said at the moment, Ongwediva had the only vehicle and driver testing centre in the four northern regions of Oshana, Ohangwena, Omusati and Kunene. To relieve pressure on the Ongwediva Centre, the ministry commissioned temporary driving testing centres at Eenhana and Outapi in early 2010 but vehicle roadworthiness testing still has to be done at Ongwediva.
