EENHANA, the capital of the Ohangwena Region, is one of the fastest growing towns in the country, says its Mayor, Julia Shikongo.

Eenhana was proclaimed a settlement and the administrative centre of the Ohangwena Region in1992, and was proclaimed as a town in April 1999. Shikongo told a press conference last week that Eenhana had only 500 serviced erven when it was proclaimed a town.Since then, the town has gained more than 1 000 business, industrial and residential plots, more than 700 new houses, two primary schools, a multi-purpose youth centre, a modern hospital and clinic, a Police station and a Magistrate’s Court.Other new developments included an abattoir, an industrial park, grocery shops, offices of various Government Ministries and non-governmental organisations and a branch of Bank Windhoek, the Mayor said.During the 2005-2006 financial year, the Town Council undertook projects such as the construction of new oxidation ponds at a cost of N$4 million and the installation of street lights and resurfacing of some streets.Other milestones included the construction of the Police regional headquarters by the Ministry of Safety and Security and the establishment of a vocational training centre by the Ohangwena Regional Council.Shikongo applauded the establishment of private medical and dental practices and a pharmacy at the town.Shikongo said the Town Council had budgeted N$5,8 million for various developments in the 2006-2007 financial year.New businesses that have set up shop at Eenhana this year include First National Bank, Standard Bank and NamPost. The Mayor said the town still needed hotels or guesthouses, modern filling stations, an additional water reservoir and tower, servicing of about 900 new plots, surfacing about 10 km of streets and better television and radio reception.According to Shikongo, the extension of the Trans-Caprivi Highway to Cape Frio on the coast will make Eenhana the economic hub of the Ohangwena Region, and a number of investors have already started making enquires about investing in the town.Shikongo told a press conference last week that Eenhana had only 500 serviced erven when it was proclaimed a town.Since then, the town has gained more than 1 000 business, industrial and residential plots, more than 700 new houses, two primary schools, a multi-purpose youth centre, a modern hospital and clinic, a Police station and a Magistrate’s Court.Other new developments included an abattoir, an industrial park, grocery shops, offices of various Government Ministries and non-governmental organisations and a branch of Bank Windhoek, the Mayor said.During the 2005-2006 financial year, the Town Council undertook projects such as the construction of new oxidation ponds at a cost of N$4 million and the installation of street lights and resurfacing of some streets.Other milestones included the construction of the Police regional headquarters by the Ministry of Safety and Security and the establishment of a vocational training centre by the Ohangwena Regional Council.Shikongo applauded the establishment of private medical and dental practices and a pharmacy at the town.Shikongo said the Town Council had budgeted N$5,8 million for various developments in the 2006-2007 financial year.New businesses that have set up shop at Eenhana this year include First National Bank, Standard Bank and NamPost. The Mayor said the town still needed hotels or guesthouses, modern filling stations, an additional water reservoir and tower, servicing of about 900 new plots, surfacing about 10 km of streets and better television and radio reception.According to Shikongo, the extension of the Trans-Caprivi Highway to Cape Frio on the coast will make Eenhana the economic hub of the Ohangwena Region, and a number of investors have already started making enquires about investing in the town.
