DTS Hopsol and Spoilers went to the top of the log after the first two rounds of the Namibia Football Association’s transitional Southern Stream First Division over the weekend.
DTS Hopsol, who are competing in the league for the first time, beat Windhoek United 2-0 on Saturday after goals by former African Stars stalwarts Johannes Seibeb and Edwin Korukuve, while they came from behind to beat Ramblers 2-1 on Sunday.
Xavier McClune put Ramblers ahead after 10 minutes, running onto a through-ball by Edmar Kamatuka, to put the ball into the net.
DTS stepped up the tempo after the break and finally got the equaliser after a great strike by Seibeb from the edge of the box midway through the second half.
They continued to attack and with three minutes to go Boni Paulino scored the winner, deflecting a cross by Seibeb into the net.
The victory puts DTS Hopsol at the top of the log with Spoilers, who beat Khomas Nampol 1-0 and Eleven Champions 4-0 over the weekend.
DTS coach and former Brave Warriors midfielder Oliver Risser said he was pleased with his team’s performances.
“I’m very pleased with my team. In the first 20 to 30 minutes we did not do what I wanted them to put on the field, but then in the last 10 minutes of the first half we adjusted a bit and got more hold of the ball. At half time we had a quick chat, and then my team came out as I wanted them – with a fighting spirit, with enthusiasm and urgency, and with quality on and off the ball, and this is what made the difference,” he said.
“I respect Ramblers, they have a young team and I admire what Jomo is trying to build here with young players. They’ve got the future, next year or in two years’ time, so Im quite astonished how well these young boys are playing, but don’t take the credit away from my team. To come back like that was a good performance, I mean this is still the transitional league so yes’ it’s three points, but at the moment it’s just part of our preparations,” he added.
Blue Boys, Dates Eleven and Try Again all got off to winning starts and are currently on three points each on the log.
Blue Boys beat Western Spurs 3-0 at the Mondesa Stadium in Swakopmund, while Dates Eleven beat Namibia Correctional Services 2-1, and Try Again beat the same opponents at the J Stephanus Stadium in Keetmanshoop.
Western Spurs and Northern Stars, meanwhile, drew 1-1 at the Jan Wilkens Stadium in Walvis Bay.
