Driving the future today

• FRANCOIS LOTTERING“THEY did it, such an extreme ordinary classic,” Seinio Ndeiluka said when seeing the demo model of the new Hyundai Tucson 2.0L Diesel.

Top Revs could not agree with Ndeiluka more when we met at a local bistro for a quick stopover and some fresh coffee.

The Hyundai Tucson is more than just a good looking car with soft lines and hidden features, this car is a road stunner. The creators didn ‘t neglect anything inside, outside or underneath the car when they set out to design something new, fresh and eye-catching.

Taking temporary ownership of the Tucson at Hyundai’s showroom in Windhoek last week left me in awe for a few minutes as I surveyed the car and the technology that sat at the tip of my fingers. Feasting my eyes around the cabin and instruments, the Tucson’s lines draw attention to detail.

The modern touches left me speechless, as one would only expect this kind of technology in premium, high-end brands.

From the very front of the car, the first thing that catches the eye are the hidden daytime running lights that are only revealed once switched on. The black front grill bearing the Hyundai emblem is just as attractive as the rest of the car and the side mirrors with colour-coded LED indicators complement the cabin’s rear view mirror, giving the driver a clear indication of traffic behind and beside the car.

There are also warning indicators that electronically scan for blind spots when changing lanes and with lane following assistance which ensures driver safety in cases of fatigue or when the driver loses concentration, drifting into the other lane and possibly causing a collision is avoided.

Fitted with extra safety features like the Hyundai SmartSense (TM) that constantly monitors the road and surroundings to keep you safe, the Hyundai Tucson is also fitted with forward collision avoidance to further prevent accidents.

The rear of the vehicle will leave anyone who loves a sporty looking car in awe as the rear diamond shaped lights, complemented with wraparound LED light strips, gives it that extra sporty kick.

The boot spoiler not only makes the car more attractive, it also hides the rear wiper, with the ‘H ‘ for Hyundai neatly and clearly embedded in the window’s bottom rear.

The Tucson not only provides for driver comfort and passenger space, but the rear seats can also recline for added passenger comfort. There are also anchor points fitted for a baby safety chair.

With a luggage compartment with more than 1100 litres of storage space and with the rear seat that can split in a 60/40 configuration effectively doubling the capacity of the luggage compartment, holidays with the family are a breeze.

The whole interior of the car tells a story of modern softness and spacious design, complemented with the 10,25-inch soft touch screen, the driver has all the luxury of technology to ensure a memorable and comfortable road trip.

Fitted with a dual climate control system, which allows both the driver and passenger to set their personal temperature preferences, the heated seats and steering wheel bring that added touch of comfort on cold winter days.

The car is also fitted with a panoramic sunroof that gives that extra feeling of space, while at the same time allowing the car’s occupants to enjoy the open skies at the touch of a button.

The Tucson comes in various models with an engine capacity of 2.0L diesel or petrol. The petrol engines all come with a 6-speed gearbox while the 8-speed diesel delivers 137kW at 4000rpm, and petrol engines need around 6200rpm to deliver 115kW.

With fuel prices that continue to skyrocket, the 2.0L diesel will not leave you out of pocket, with a combined fuel consumption of 7.4L/100km, it is not only fuel efficient but can reach around 750km on a full tank of 54 litres.

The Tucson comes standard with stylish alloy rims ranging from 17-inch to 19-inch on the diesel, as well as a five year/150 000km manufacturers warranty, additional two year/50 000km manufacturer’s powertrain warranty, and a six year/90 000 km service plan, with service intervals at 15 000km.
