Cricketers out to regain lead

NAMIBIA’s cricket team will be out to extend their unbeaten run in the Sunfoil 3 Day Cup when they take on Border at Buffalo Park, East London from Thursday.

Namibia have had their best start ever in the competition and have won all five their matches to date.

They led the log till the end of last year, but have since been overtaken by KwaZulu Natal, although Namibia still have two games in hand.

Last weekend KZN beat Northerns by nine wickets to go to the top of the log for the first time this season on 129,40 points from seven matches, while Namibia are second on 113,20 from five matches, and North West third on 89,64 points from seven matches.

Last weekend Namibia notched up their fifth consecutive win against Eastern Province in Port Elizabeth after a fine all round performance by their batsmen and bowlers.

Jan Frylinck starred with the bat, scoring 56 and 75, while he also scored a whirlwind 111 not out in their CSA One Day Challenge match.

The 20-year-old Nico Davin also made use of his rare opportunity in the senior side with innings’ of 47 and 44 against EP.

All the bowlers pitched in with impressive performances, none more so than the veteran Craig Williams, who had match figures of six wickets for 57 runs, while Tiaan Snyman had match figures of 6/48.

Border, however, will be tough opponents on their home turf at Buffalo Park where they have already beaten Western Province and Boland this season.

They have only played five matches to date, winning two, drawing two and losing one, while they are currently fifth on the log on 79,32 points.

Namibia’s squad has, meanwhile, been strengthened by the return of their regular captain Sarel Burger, who missed last weekend’s match against Eastern Province due to work commitments.

The Namibian squad is as follows:

Sarel Burger (captain), Stephen Baard, Zayn Green, Jean Bredenkamp, Craig Williams, Gerhard Erasmus, Jan Frylinck, Niko Davin, Karl Birkenstock, JJ Smit, Danie van Schoor, Bernard Scholtz, Tiaan Snyman and Tangeni Lungameni.
