Creating a Future, Enhancing Life

The Ohlthaver & List (O&L) Group has a comprehensive Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) strategy that supports our purpose, ‘Creating a Future, Enhancing Life’ and we believe educational support is one of the fundamental ways we can live our Group’s purpose and values to create a tangible positive impact in our country.

As a caring organisation we take the wellbeing and education of our Namibian society and children to heart. At O&L we believe literacy is the most important investment into a country’s future and that it should start at a very early stage.

Within our company we have developed an Adult Basic Education Development (ABED) training programme to give our employees the opportunity to improve their literacy.

The Adult Education division offers teaching and learning in both theory and practice for functional literacy purposes. Learners are prepared to apply this knowledge to practical issues of poverty, civic affairs and social change, while at the same time learning how to read and write.

Adult students are encouraged to develop a critical understanding and thinking of major current affairs debates, theories and strategic interventions. The programme trains employees for effective communication in the workplace.

The key to literacy is a reading development programme with a progression of skills that begins with the ability to understand spoken words and decode written words, and culminates in the deep understanding of text.

Literacy is essential to eradicate poverty at home and create sustainable development. Without literacy skills – the ability to read, to write, to do maths, to solve problems, and to access and use technology – our future leaders will struggle to take part in the world around them and fail to reach their full potential as parents and community members.

We believe that to develop our beautiful Namibia and her people, we need leaders who inspire and innovate. Reading encourages our children to become successful learners in their school journey as it stimulates one to be creative and innovative. Innovation results from the combination of ideas and concepts. The more we read, the more ideas and concepts come to mind and the more we can contribute to the development of our country.

We support the Let’s Read initiative because The Namibian bundles will inform and educate pupils in remote and marginalised communities with reading material. At O&L our vision is to have breakthrough leaders for our country and these bundles will keep pupils informed on what is going on in the world and updated with current affairs.

We are pleased to be part of such an inspiring initiative which contributes to the development of our country and promotes an educated nation and we look forward to growing the project and welcoming more institutions on board.
