The swearing-in of regional council and local authority councillors is set to take place on Friday, with local or district magistrates officiating.
This was announced by Ministry of Urban and Rural Development executive director Wilhelmine Shivute on Wednesday.
“You are therefore required to make all the necessary arrangements,” she said.
This comes after Shivute on Friday last week cancelled the swearing-in of councillors that was scheduled for Wednesday.
Official opposition leader Imms Nashinge was one of those who criticised the cancellation, terming it as a decision that will have a negative impact on the community and also a legal implication in terms of the Local Authorities of 1992, which states that the swearing-in of local authority councillors must take place within seven days after their election.
Former Judea Lyaboloma constituency regional councillor Divai Humphrey said the delayed swearing-in of councillors was hampering service delivery.
“As we speak, even if community people come to me, I cannot help them because my term ended on 30 November. So we needed the swearing-in to commence immediately,” he said.
With the date now set, he said communities can now remain positive as incoming councillors are now going to work with allocated funds.
