Cops identify 50 crime hotspots in Windhoek

The hotspots were flagged as part of the police’s efforts to combat increasing cases of robberies and other crimes.

Khomas police spokesperson warrant officer Silas Shipandeni told The Namibian that they are working on ways to reduce crime in the region.

Some of the top crime spots identified in Katutura include Freedomland, Havana, Goreangab and Greenwell Matongo.

Other areas include Otjomuise, Rocky Crest, Khomasdal and Hochland Park.

“The most crimes committed in these areas are normally robbery, housebreaking and theft from persons, and domestic violence,” Shipandeni said.

“The identified hotspots are the crime-prone areas in the vicinity of Windhoek, he said.

The Namibian Police together with the Windhoek City Police have engaged in a crime-prevention campaign titled ‘Get involved’,” Shipandeni said.

He further urged the public to be alert because the police are not always available when crimes are being committed.

“We are also engaging our colleagues in the City of Windhoek to have billboards that alert the public on these crime hotspots,” he said.

The decision by the police to flag major crime hotspots comes at a time when they have been recording an increase in robberies, rape cases as well as other serious crimes.

Last month, police inspector general Joseph Shikongo said they are gearing up towards implementing a countrywide operation to crack down on crime.

“We are coming back with a stronger operation [than the previous Operation Kalahari Desert], and we are not just going to be conducting it in Khomas, but will extend our operation to every corner of the country where crime is a concern,” he said at the time.
