The 30th Conference of the Parties (COP30) has come to an end without the participating countries reaching a formal agreement on how to transition from fossil fuels to clean energy.
COP30 was hosted in Belém, Brazil, from 10 to 21 November.
COP20 president Manuel Pulgar-Vidal at the event said the conference delivered neither a road map nor real solutions for the urgent challenges brought about by climate change.
“Instead, we were taken for a ride on a carousel of illusions – distracted by colourful promises but left with a document that is weak and lacking in substance due to games played by the forces against climate ambition and implementation,” he said.
Countries meeting at COP30 approved a set of actions, including a decision to implement a just transition mechanism.
However, despite efforts and support from at least 86 countries, negotiators were unable to agree on any direct mention of the transition away from fossil fuels in formal texts.
In addition, outside of the formal negotiations, Brazil will lead a science-based international discussion of road maps for transitioning away from fossil fuels and ending deforestation.
