The public service has a poor reputation, and much of it is understandable.
Citizens queue for hours. Suppliers wait months to be paid. Documents go missing.
However, this week’s Public Sector Awards is a reminder that a number of civil servants quietly get the work done. Secretary to Cabinet Emilia Mukasa, who chairs the school of government known as the Nipam council, said:
“The quality of public service depends, to a significant extent, on the quality, competence, commitment and continuous development of the people who serve the public”.
Mukasa said Namibia must build a public service that is competent, ethical, efficient, responsive and accountable. She is spot on.
Congratulations to the winners.
Some civil servants might not get the recognition through awards but your work is appreciated.
An efficient public service is the cornerstone of a productive society.
