Coetzee & Hinz excel at Gravel Burn

Drikus Coetzee and Melissa Hinz excelled to win their age group categories at the Nedbank Gravel Burn which was concluded in South Africa today. 

Coetzee won gold in the men’s 19-34 year category and Hinz gold in the women’s 40-44 year category, while Ingram Cuff and Frank Snyman both won bronze medals in the men’s 40-44 and 60-64 year old categories. 

The seven-day 800km stage race began in Knysna in the Western Cape, traversed the Greay Karoo, and concluded with a 112km stage today that finished at Shamwari Private Games Reserve in the Eastern Cape. 

Coetzee won gold in the men’s 19-34 year category in an overall time of 21:59:46, finishing more than an hour and a half ahead of Verster Venter of South Africa (23:30:55) while Javier Angulo Guirao of Spain came third in 24:33:28. 

Hinz won the women’s 40-44 year old category in a time of 26:54:18, finishing 23:32 ahead of Anneke Lund of SA (27:17:50) while Janine Muller of SA came third in 27:27:47. 

Snyman won the bronze medal in the men’s 60-64 category in a time of 25:48:25, with Mario Kummer of Germany winning gold in 25:04:32 and Stewart Goodman of South Africa silver in 25:29:21.

Cuff won the bronze medal in the men’s 40-44 year old category in an overall time of 22:14:04, finishing 15:28 behind the winner, Erik Kleinhans of SA who won the category in 21:58:36, with Fabien Monnier of Switzerland coming second in 22:12:11. 

Matthew Beers of SA won the Elite Men’s race in an overall time of 19:01:03, with Simon Pellaud of Switzerland coming second in 19:06:29 and Hugo Drechou of France third in 19:09:59. 

Namibia’s Martin Freyer, riding for Team Hollard Namibia, came 13th, more than an hour behind Beers in 20:05:52, while Namibia’s Alex Miller, riding for Team Swatt Club, came 15th in 20:10:06.
