THE Motor Vehicle Accident Fund (MVA) was still dealing with the aftermath of Thursday’s accident at Aussenkehr when their call centre received information about a minibus accident involving children in Windhoek.
The children were being transported to swimming classes at around noon on Friday when the accident occurred in Mandume Ndemufayo Avenue close to the Eros Airport.
MVA chief executive officer (CEO) Rosalia Martins-Hausiku was also at the scene to familiarise herself with the accident before addressing the media. She said at least 13 children were in the minibus when the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer off the road and uproot a tree.
“The driver – a woman – sustained serious injuries, while one of the children fractured a leg,” she said.
The Windhoek emergency services, who were on the scene within minutes, had to make use of mechanical equipment to free the injured driver from the wreck.
Hundreds of curious onlookers and parents flocked to the scene in hopes to find that their children were unharmed.
The cause of the accident is unknown and police investigations are underway.
On Thursday morning, more than 130 employees of the Namibia Grape Export company sustained moderate to serious injuries when the truck they were being transported in overturned at Aussenkehr in the //Karas Region. – Nampa
