Chequered flag glory at Tony Rust Race Track

Tight races … Ekko Eisenberg (251) and Clive Strydom (614) rubbing tyres.

Tight competition, mechanical setbacks and standout performances marked the second leg of national circuit racing at the Tony Rust Race Track outside Windhoek this past weekend.

At times, the chequered flag could have belonged to any of the four racers on the track.

The different category winners exceeded their own expectations as a result of strong competition throughout the entire event.

But it was not all smooth riding, as Marius ‘Mad Mike’ van Zyl got a flat tyre during the first heat that was repaired in the pits.

Disaster struck again in the second heat when his Audi’s engine developed irreparable problems and forced him to miss the rest of the race.

But the racer over the weekend assured Top Revs he would be back for the third leg on 28 June.

Craig Bisschoff also had a bad day and had to withdraw his vehicle early during the competition due to mechanical problems that could not be fixed in the pits.

Ekko Eisenberg’s Golf also experienced some technical issues, but they were fixed by his technical crew, and he was back on the tracks again in a jiffy.

From the six entries, only four managed to complete the entire race, but not without putting up a fight for the finishing line.

In the Clubman’s Class C race, it was Clive Strydom and Jan Everson from Walvis Bay who kept the spectators alive, but Everson eventually walked away in first place, followed by Strydom.

The scoring paints the complete picture, as Everson emerged victorious by a mere two points.

In the Clubman’s Class D, the fight was between Eisenberg and Van Zyl. When Van Zyl had to retire, Eisenberg kept the racing spirit on and ensured the three remaining racers had no time to relax.

“There were four cars on the tracks. Then the one was in front, then the other, but it was good racing and I enjoyed it,” Everson told Top Revs after the event.

Strydom said his vehicle developed gearbox problems and one of the gears got stuck.

This did not break his racing spirit and he managed to end in second place after Everson.

Eisenberg commended the camaraderie and thanked his fellow racers for allowing space on the tracks for the faster cars.

Horazio ‘Rassie’ Rietz in his VW Golf managed a good time with his fastest lap time of 79.65 seconds.

Strydom clocked the fastest lap for the day with a time of 76.12 seconds.

The next event will take place at the end of next month at the Tony Rust Race Track.

The results are as follows:

Clubman’s Class C: first place, Everson, second place, Strydom

Clubman’s Class D: Eisenberg

Clubman’s Class X: Rietz
