Cheque stolen from Usakos council

A LARGE-SCALE investigation has been launched at the municipality of Usakos after a cheque of N$125 000 was stolen.

The stolen cheque was cashed in Windhoek the past week.Officials at the town say they have no clue how the cheque could have gone missing.Upon enquiry, Manfred Weskop, the executive assistant: operations at the town council, told The Namibian that the cheque went missing from the municipality’s finance department. According to him, eight people work in this department. No one has been suspended in connection with the theft yet, he said.A charge of theft was laid at the Police station at Usakos the past week.Weskop said the internal investigation into the theft was almost completed but no suspect had been identified yet.He said the theft came to light after the bank had alerted the town council.According to him, it is unclear how the money could have gone missing as ‘the [municipality’s] control system is very tight. It caught us by surprise.’Weskop said the cheque had been issued in a person’s name. Although he said this person did not work for the municipality, he refused to reveal the person’s name. He said: ‘That will mess up the investigation.’Chief Inspector Chris Kalimbula, crime co-ordinator for the Erongo Region, yesterday afternoon said he was not aware of the theft case.
