Namibia’s Capricorn Eagles are well set to reach the final of the Capricorn Quadrangular Women’s T20 series after an unbeaten start to the tournament.
After a comfortable nine-wicket win against Tanzania in their opening match on 21 July, Namibia’s match against Uganda the next day went down to the wire and had to be determined on a super over after both teams ended with scores of 123/7.
Namibia, however, won the super over to go to the top of the log.
On Friday, Namibia beat Hong Kong by five wickets after fine performances by the Mwatile sisters, Wilka and Meke.
Batting first, Hong Kong scored 113/7 off their 20 overs with Bibi Maryam scoring 38 not out, while Meke Mwatile took three wickets for 10 runs.
In reply, Namibia were in trouble after losing some early wickets and at the halfway stage were struggling at 43/4.
Wilka and Kayleen Green, however, swung the match in Namibia’s favour with a 56-run fifth wicket partnership before Green was dismissed for 26.
Soon after, Mwatile (39 not out) hit the winning runs as Namibia reached the target for the loss of five wickets, while Mwatile also won the player of the match award.
On Saturday, Namibia once again sealed another emphatic nine wicket victory against Tanzania.
Tanzania were restricted to 96/5 off their 20 overs, while Namibia reached the target for the loss of one wicket with more than six overs to spare.
Sune Wittmann scored 56 to win her second player of the match award, while Merely Gorases scored 30 not out.
Namibia now lead the log on eight points, followed by Uganda (six), Hong Kong (two) and Tanzania (zero).
In matches today at the FNB Namibia Cricket Ground, Hong Kong take on Tanzania at 09h00, while Namibia take on Uganda at 14h00.
Tomorrow, Namibia take on Hong Kong at 09h00, while Tanzania face Uganda at 14h00.
The top team will go straight to the final, while the second and third placed teams will play off in a semi-final with both matches scheduled for Thursday.
