NICKY Buys won the Player of the Year award at Windhoek High School Old Boys’ (WHSOB) annual awards ceremony which was recently held at its club house at Vegkop.
Playing for WHSOB’s Vintage team in the National First League, Buys won three awards for both batting and bowling. He was the best batsman and bowler in the 40-over league, and the best batsman in the T20 league.
It was a successful year for the club, which won the Three Ships Whiskey 50-over Premier League title for the first time in four years.
The last time they won the Premier League title was in the 2013/14 season when they also won the T20 title.
At Cricket Namibia’s annual awards, the club also featured prominently amongst the individual awards.
Craig Williams won the player of the year award; Eben van Wyk was the u19 player of the year; and Divan La Cock won the u13 player of the year award.
At club level, Gareth Cloete won the Premier League 50-over best batsman award; Nicky Buys won the First League 40-over and T20 best batsman award; and Albert Maartens won the Second League best bowler award.
In his chairman’s report, Christo van Zyl congratulated the team and their coach Gareth Cloete for their commitment and dedication.
He also congratulated Vernon Cloete who became the first WHSOB Premier League player to play 50 limited overs matches for the club, with the last one coming in the Premier League final against ECB Welwitschias.
WHSOB’s various award winners were as follows:
Premier League 50-overs best batsman: Gareth Cloete (293 runs at an average of 48,83).
Premier League 50-overs best bowler: Ricardo Strauss (15 wickets at an economy rate of 4,85).
Premier League T20 best batsman: Albert van der Merwe (114 runs at an average of 22,80).
Premier League T20 best bowler: Vernon Cloete (eight wickets at an economy rate of 6,77).
First League 40-over best batsman: Benjamin Calitz (161 runs at an average of 53,67).
First League 40-over best bowler: Ashley Griffiths (six wickets at an economy rate of 5,89).
First League T20 best batsman: Wesley Anderson (167 runs at an average of 33,40).
First League T20 best bowler: JW Prinsloo (five wickets at an economy rate of 8,65).
Second League 30-over best batsman: Bruwer Laubscher (136 runs at an average of 34,00).
Second League 30-over best bowler: Michael Laubscher (11 wickets at an economy rate of 5,49).
Second League T20 best batsman: Pieter Laubscher (195 runs at an average of 24,38).
Second League T20 best bowler: Albert Maartens (15 wickets at an economy rate of 5,70).
Vintage team 40-over best batsman: Nicky Buys (338 runs at an average of 56,33 runs).
Vintage team 40-over best bowler: Nicky Buys (13 wickets at an economy rate of 5,05).
Vintage team T20 best batsman: Nicky Buys (335 runs at an average of 67,00).
Vintage team T20 best bowler: Rudi van Vuuren (nine wickets at an economy rate of 7,04).
Francois Erasmus was elected as chairman of the club and Ben Calitz as vice-chairman. The remaining executive committee members are:
