Boxer denied bail on homicide charge

NAMIBIAN boxer Willbeforce ‘Black Mamba’ Shihepo was denied bail yesterday in the Okahandja Magistrate’s Court after he was arrested on a charge of culpable homicide.

The 34-year-old allegedly fled an accident scene 30 kilometres south of Okahandja en route to Windhoek on Saturday evening.

It is alleged that his unregistered metallic grey Jaguar had driven into the back of a Toyota sedan.

The accident resulted in the instant death of a man (54) and a six-year-old girl.

Shihepo appeared in court yesterday morning after handing himself over to the police. He was denied bail, and remains in police custody. His case was postponed to 21 November.

Police said the deceased persons were the only occupants in the sedan.

They have been identified as Likius Petrus and Toivo Linda Teopoline Nghipuyoonda, whose next of kin have been informed.

Police chief inspector Kauna Shikwambi yesterday said Shihepo was charged with culpable homicide, failure to ascertain the nature and extent of injuries sustained by a person after an accident, failure to render assistance to an injured person after an accident, failure to ascertain the extent of damage after an accident and operating an unroadworthy vehicle.

In another accident, a 30-year-old driver succumbed to his injuries after he was involved in a car accident on Sunday night on the Utuseb-Walvis Bay road just outside Walvis Bay.

Two passengers sustained injuries after the driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle they were travelling in, causing it to overturn.

The deceased’s next of kin have not yet been informed.

Meanwhile, four men aged 29, 32, 34 and 42 years were arrested on Sunday evening near the NamPower station in Windhoek’s Northern Industrial Area after being found in possession of a live pangolin estimated to be worth N$50 000.

On Sunday at about 21h00 at Ombondeyomutsegondjamba Village, in the Ruacana constituency, a woman identified as Hilda Markus (40) died on the spot after she was hit on the head with a wooden stick by a 48-year-old male suspect said to be her husband.

It is alleged that the victim and the suspect were involved in an argument.

Markus’ next of kin have been informed. The suspect was arrested, and is expected to appear in court today.
