BMW X1 balances comfort and performance

The latest BMW X1 combines luxury, comfort and sporty performance in a compact package that feels at home both in town and on the open road.

Anél Molzahn from Pupkewitz BMW says the standout qualities are its road-holding and safety.

“The sporty and dynamic driving experience are the two main above-average qualities you get when driving this X1,” she says.

Powered by a 2-litre turbo engine delivering 110kW and 360Nm (3 750–4 000 r/min), the X1 responds instantly. whether accelerating or braking.

Fuel efficiency adds to its appeal, with the diesel model averaging 20km/L and the petrol version about 16km/L.

Inside, the X1 strikes a balance between sportiness and refinement. Dual coral red and black seats add a touch of class, though colour options are extensive.

Molzahn favours oyster white, which gives the cabin a more spacious look.

The adaptive LED headlights contribute to the car’s dynamic design, while fulfilling Namibia’s requirement for headlights on main roads. A multifunction steering wheel integrates cruise control, radio and cellphone functions for driver convenience.

The model reviewed came with the M Sport pack, which adds cosmetic flair without affecting performance.

Molzahn acknowledges that new car buyers – especially older ones – can be cautious about modern technology, but stresses that BMW has refined its iDrive 8.5 system to be intuitive.

This system offers navigation, vehicle status data, voice-activated controls, climate settings and shortcuts for frequently used functions.

The redesigned display, with updated colours and fonts, makes information easier to access while driving.

BMW has also reimagined the driving experience by replacing the traditional gear lever with an electronic shifter. Though its look differs from earlier designs, operation remains familiar and drivers adapt quickly.

Seating is another strength. Molzahn highlighted the option of ‘comfort seats’, offering a wide range of adjustments from lumbar to full-body support. Heated seats are also available, a welcome extra for colder climates.

With ergonomics often overlooked, the X1’s thoughtful design reduces driver fatigue on longer trips.

Attention to detail is evident throughout the interior, from contrast stitching to a well-designed central armrest that enhances the sense of space. Despite being the smallest model in BMW’s line-up, the X1 feels far from entry-level.

The combination of efficiency, responsive handling, safety, technology and luxury styling cements the X1’s position as a versatile premium compact SUV – equally suited to daily commuting and longer journeys.
