‘Blended Voices’ competition extends application period

The National Theatre of Namibia (NTN) has extended the audition deadline for its anticipated ‘Blended Voices – A Namibian Choral Celebration’ competition, allowing choirs more time to apply and showcase their talent.

The new deadline of 26 February aims to ensure wider participation.

The competition, scheduled for 26 April, aims to celebrate and elevate Namibian choral music by blending traditional and contemporary elements.

NTN public relations officer Desiree Mentor describes the initiative as a landmark event for the country’s music industry.

“‘Blended Voices’ represents a groundbreaking initiative by the NTN to showcase and elevate the country’s choral music culture,” Mentor says.

The competition will feature five top choirs selected through auditions who will compete for a grand prize of N$50 000. Participants will perform contemporary Namibian songs in the first two rounds, followed by a final round where all choirs will present the same prescribed piece. The competition will be judged by an external panel of choral music experts, evaluating elements such as intonation, diction, etiquette, technique and overall musicality.

Mentor emphasises that the NTN is committed to making ‘Blended Voices’ a flagship production that not only recognises talent but also strengthens the country’s arts sector.

“As the NTN’s flagship production, it serves multiple vital purposes: showcasing emerging talent, celebrating contemporary Namibian music, and creating a bridge between traditional and modern musical expressions,” she says.

In addition to celebrating artistic excellence, the event is expected to draw significant attention and media coverage. With over 400 attendees expected, ‘Blended Voices’ will offer choirs a professional platform to reach new audiences and build their careers.

“The competition is poised to make a significant impact on Namibia’s arts community by creating a professional platform for choirs to perform before a large audience and generating widespread media coverage that will reach thousands,” Mentor says.

She adds that for many participants, this could be the opportunity that propels them to new heights.

“For many choirs, this event could be the breakthrough moment, encouraging new collaborations, artistic exploration, and networking within the music and arts communities,” she says.

The NTN encourages choirs from all regions to take advantage of the extended deadline and submit their auditions via WhatsApp at +264 81 366 2133 by 26 February. Full competition details can be found at www.ntn.org.na.
