Big Brother Africa 4: The boys party, the girls have a ‘blowout’

THE boys kicked off Saturday evening with some sexy cocktails, vodka and lime with cherries. Oooh, they looked delicious!

Almost wished I could join them for one but alas, it was not to be. The sex-starved guys were treated to a feast for the eyes, ears and imagination a little later when Biggie decided to provide some hot sounds courtesy of a funky female DJ and some sexy dancers. The guys had a great time, dancing and just generally standing up against the glass to get a good look. I gotta say Quinn dances to his own beat but I really love checking him out on the dance floor. He’s no Eminem but can still pull off the cool white boy thang. The guys all looked miles more handsome after getting some much needed professional styling when hairdressers provided a quick once over. They even managed to get the usually sloppy and dopey looking Yacob into something resembling a handsome man. Amazing how a simple haircut can make some guys better looking. Hannington refused to cut off his mini-fro though, saying he was trying to grow dreadlocks. Just by the way, anyone notice how 70s pimp Itai’s image is? That black leather hat just isn’t doing it for him. Kinda makes me wish I could take him shopping and help him choose a few cool, new outfits. BLOW-UP IN LADYLANDI love Kevin’s new do! The funky Mohawk makes him look so cute. Yeah I know guys don’t like the word cute, but trust me, cute is not an insult. He just has that cool, cute look and when he wears those shades, he looks like he should be famous! I’m starting to like him more and more and if I have to predict at this stage who the main contenders for the US$200 000 prize money is going to be, then I think Kevin is definitely one of them.Meanwhile over in LadyLand, the first fight has come and gone and, surprise, surprise, it included our very own Namibian firecracker, Rene. This is how it went down …Zambia’s Paloma, the one blessed with a bountiful booty, seems to be suffering from a niggly bout of flu and was blowing her nose in the bathroom basin. Rene then asked her to rather please use a tissue and that’s when Paloma just kinda blew up and used the whole episode to vent, get rid of all her pent-up emotions and complain about a whole long list of things. Uggh, that bloody martyr-syndrome really irritates me. Why do people do things if they’re going to complain about it all the time? Rather do it with a smile or don’t do it at all! Not taking sides here but I think Rene’s request was reasonable? A lot more reasonable than Paloma’s reaction. She got really upset and said the Rene should go and tell Big Brother to ask her (Paloma) to leave if Rene felt Paloma was contagious or infected or whatever. She was shouting and refused to listen to a word Rene tried to say. I don’t think Rene really meant to offend her and tried to explain that they were all free to talk about things that bother them but she couldn’t get a word in edgeways. Paloma just ranted and raved about having to clean out the toilet pot and never complaining. Rene kept apologising for having offended her but Paloma was too upset at the time. I hear that they later hugged and made peace.A CHANCE TO TALKThis was actually quite a sensitive fight if you look at it closely. Whether or not it actually has any significant undercurrents – remains to be seen. I have a feeling it won’t be the last misunderstanding over what one thinks is normal and what the other doesn’t.Funny how these things aren’t talked about in the media much but I that’s exactly why incorporating a whole range of African cultures is so great! They bring out issues and differences that have always divided us and kept us separate. It allows us to start talking about our differences openly. I hope the incident can be seen for what it is though, a tiny little squabble and not a case for the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Hopefully audiences around Africa won’t pick the most obvious scapegoat and Rene will stay in the house a while longer. I am starting to like her more and more and I don’t think she’s a bad person, even underneath her hard-partying exterior. But she is so completely opposite of the stereotypical image of what a good African lady is supposed to be, so it might just make her an easy target for eviction. At the time of going to press, the guys and girls were getting ready for the Sunday eviction show and by the time you read this, one or two of the female housemates will already have been evicted. Hopefully not our girl! Fingers crossed.* Check out tonight’s Nomination show at 20h30 on Channel 102 to find out whose head is up on the chopping block.* Tune in to DStv Channel 198 or 199 to catch the action live 24/7, or watch the daily highlights show on M-Net (DStv Channel 101/102) and AfricaMagic (DStv Channel 114) every day at 18h30.
