Officer involved in Onhuno roadblock shooting arrested

The police have confirmed the arrest of an officer who allegedly shot and killed a truck driver at Onhuno in the Ohangwena region in the early hours of Monday morning.

Confirming the incident, national police spokesperson deputy commisisoner Kauna Shikwambi said Eliud Hamukwaya (38) and his co-driver stopped at the Onhuno roadblock, when Hamukwaya was asked for his driving licence and weighbridge documents.

Hamukwaya allegedly only presented his driving licence.

“The officer requested the two to park on the roadside. An argument erupted between the co-driver and the officer, who further requested that they drive back to weighbridge, ” Shikwambi said.

The co-driver then allegedly got into the truck and drove towards another police officer, who had to flee in fear of being run over.

It was at this time that the now-arrested officer took his firearm and shot at Hamukwaya.

“The driver died immediately, and the 43-year-old officer with a rank of sergeant was arrested and is expected to appear in the Ohangwena Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday. Police investigations into the matter continue. “
