Be Fair To Foreigners

Be Fair To Foreigners

I READ with surprise The Namibian dated March 13 2006, in which it is reported that Felix Johannes Shikololo, the pioneering Oshiwambo rap artist, got bail of N$10 000.

He has to appear in court in July when the case starts. Felix and the three others were arrested – two foreign nationals and a Namibian citizen. Why is it that foreign nationals do not get fair treatment when they are arrested by law-enforcement officers? Or is the law only applicable to Namibian citizens? I have heard stories of foreign nationals arrested for various offences like fraud, drug dealing, staying illegally in Namibia; but they are sometimes left in jail for months without any bail.We need to uphold the rule of law in the land of the brave. You are innocent until proved guilty beyond reasonable doubt.I hope foreign nationals arrested in Namibia are given a fair trial.Let me suggest to the judicial system in Namibia, when a foreign national is arrested, confiscate his/her travel document, let them report to the investigating officer on a weekly basis and give them bail before the hearing of the case in court – in that way you are upholding the rule of law.Disgruntled Expatriate WindhoekFelix and the three others were arrested – two foreign nationals and a Namibian citizen. Why is it that foreign nationals do not get fair treatment when they are arrested by law-enforcement officers?
