Have you ever gone to a restaurant and been overwhelmed by the menu?Sometimes with too much to choose from, you can’t figure out what to have. More often than not, a restaurant with an encyclopedia of dishes can usually only get one or two right.
Moneiko 7 to 7 isn’t one of those places. One of its strong suits is that the menu is incredibly simple.
Moneiko means ‘to see’ in Oshiwambo. The restaurant/cafe was meant to be an optometrist initially, but plans changed and the owners Avi Telyas and Idda Taanyanda found themselves with a one-year lease and a centrally located venue, and so decided to open a restaurant.
The concept is very simple, says Telyas. “The food is simple, it’s quick and affordable. Everything is freshly made. I want people to feel like they are at home. If you don’t like your food, you don’t have to pay for it,” he says.
And he’s open to ideas and suggestions from the public about the kind of food they’d like to have more of.
Choosing between white or brown pitta bread (which is freshly baked in-house each morning), you can either have one with chicken strips, meat strips, a kebab or falafel for vegetarians. And each pitta comes with a drink of your choice.
The pittas are a staple on the menu because of Telyas’ personal love for the dish that reminds him of the Mediterranean and Middle Eastern food culture back home in Israel. If pittas aren’t your thing, you can opt for a salad instead with the same options of chicken, meat, kebab or falafel.
On the Dash
Coffee is a god for those of us who don’t get enough sleep or just need an extra boost of energy before our next staff meeting (that could really have been an email…) Moneiko 7 to 7 might just be one of the cheapest places in Windhoek to get a good cup of coffee.
Whatever your poison – be it an Americano, cappuccino, latte or espresso – it can be paired with one of their toasted sandwiches filled with something as simple as cheese and tomato, or a range of extras at an affordable price.
On Wednesdays to Fridays from 16h00 until closing, there are wine specials, which can be enjoyed along with the light music playing in the background and a chilled and relaxed atmosphere. Moneiko 7 to 7 is a great place to wind down after a long day at work. It is affordable, the food is good, the place is unassuming and you can quietly have a solo meal or catch up with friends. If you’re up for it, you could even have a chat with Telyas himself, who always has some pearls of wisdom about life and happiness to share.
All without breaking the bank. But don’t take my word for it. Check it out for yourself.
