Herunga through to 400m final
Tjipekapora Herunga came second in the women’s 400m semi-final on Monday to secure a place in the final, which was set for later yesterday.
Herunga clocked 52,35 seconds after current African champion Amanthe Montsho of Botswana, who finished in 51,50 seconds. All hopes are now on Herunga to add another medal to the silver won by triathlete Abraham Louw earlier in the competition.
Men disappoint in 100m semi-finalsNamibia’s male sprinters performed poorly at the 10th All Africa Games on Monday after all three failed to impress in the 100m semi-finals.Hitjivirue Kaanjuka came fourth in a time of 10.36 seconds, with Jessy Urikhob managing fifth place in 10,42 seconds. Tuki Jacobs, who is the 14th seed in the men’s singles competition, received a first round bye before thrashing Miguel Paixao Andre of Angola 6-0, 6-0 on Monday. The Angolan had no answer for Jacobs’ powerful serves and groundstrokes, as the Namibian ground out a convincing victory.De Witt was equally efficient as he outplayed Kombe Kenny Mabo of Zambia 6-0, 6-0. De Witt was happy with his victory.De Witt now meets M’lapa Tingou Akomio of Togo who beat the third seeded K Maamoun of Egypt 1-6, 6-2, 11-9. Namibia’s other female player Riekie Honiball received a first round bye and then easily beat Laone Botshoma of Botswana 6-1, 6-1 in the second round. Aloysius misses out on medalIn Paralympics, Namibia’s Martin Aloysius just missed out on a medal when he came fourth in the T13 400m final in a time of 51,99 seconds. Aloysius was first out of the blocks and was still leading the race at the 200m mark. He however dropped the pace over the final 100m to miss out on a medal. The race took place in the morning and Aloysius complained about the sun afterwards.Two other Namibian Para-athletes Simson Khariseb and Elian Ndumulundu failed to qualify for the final after finishing 5th and 10th respectively in their first round 800m heats. – nampa/namibiasport.com.na
