A new era in local fashion: Drag Night

UTUTJINDA KAVENDJAAIF you haven’t heard of Drag Night Nam, you’re seriously missing out!

Drag Night is a night of magic, fantasy, and pure bliss.

In addition to providing some much-needed entertainment, and creating awareness by blurring the lines around the masculine-feminine spectrum, Drag Night Nam has introduced a more contemporary feel to the matter of Namibian fashion.

Let’s take a look:

WHAT IS DRAG NIGHT NAM?

On paper, Drag Night Nam would be described as a performance of masculinity, femininity, and other forms of gender expression, however, it is way more than just a display of the different forms in the gender spectrum.

Drag Night Namibia is more of a celebration.

It pays homage to the different gender types and is a savage display of the fabulosity they embody.

“Drag Night is an important and relevant celebration of pride through performance artistry,” Lize Ehlers, technical director of Drag Night Namibia, says.

THE QUEENS

“The queens are masters of innovative, brand-aligned looks with the support of Ashante Manetti from Distinctive Art. Hair, make-up, and wardrobe are undeniable staples in drag culture,” she says.

Commonly known as the triad, Gigi, Rodelio Lewis and Chaulken Alphonso McNab, with the help of Lize Ehlers, started Drag Night Nam.

Not only have they created an amazing platform for entertainment and protest through art, but they have also created a safe space and an incredibly well-crafted vantage point, which members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ+) community can use as a platform to amplify their art and voices, and display the aesthetic of queer culture.

DRAG NIGHT IN FASHION

Drag Night has introduced a new variation of self-expression in the form of fashion.

This, of course, does not have to do with the fashionable aspects of the pieces that are worn, but the creativity and the uniqueness of these looks.

Drag Night Nam promotes inclusion, diversity, and an innovative level of creativity through its fabulous performances.

It has also opened a new door in the fashion industry.

The organisation promotes diversity, inclusion and an innovative level of creativity, which are important elements of fashion aiming for a more accomodating narrative
