34th Volleyball for All tournament launched

THE highlight on the Namibia volleyball calendar, the Windhoek Draught Volleyball for All tournament will take place for the 34th consecutive year at the DTS Club in Olympia next Saturday, 4 February.

The event was launched in Windhoek on Wednesday where Danie Keulder of Namibia Breweries said that they became involved early on.

“Namibia Breweries has been involved with the DTS Volleyball for All fun day since 1989 and has built up a successful relationship with the event and the DTS club. The tournament started out like most great events, from humble beginnings and only a handful of participants. This year will see 240 mixed teams participating, which is a great reflection of the success of this tournament,” he said.

“Windhoek Draught is extremely proud to sponsor the volleyball for all tournament – a national event bringing volleyball enthusiasts of different ages, genders, cultures and backgrounds together once a year. An event of this nature is a good reflection of the team spirit, passion and support that is enjoyed by a team of athletes and spectators alike,” he added.

Heiko Kesselman, the PRO of DTS Club said that the event was once again very popular, with a maximum number of teams, 240, having already entered, while they had a waiting list of several more teams.

This year teams will only compete in a mixed six-a-side team competition, with all teams having to field two women at all times, while only two registered volleyball players will be allowed per team.

Teams will compete in 40 groups of six teams each, with the group winners and the 24 best second-placed teams progressing to the Round of 64 knockout stage.

The eventual winner will then be determined after six knockout stages.

Kesselman added that a team briefing, to inform teams about the rules of the tournament will take place at DTS Club, starting at 18h00 on Friday, 3 February.

The president of the Namibia Volleyball Federation, Gunther Rust thanked Namibia Breweries for its support and congratulated DTS Club

“The volleyball community of Namibia is very grateful for the initiative shown by DTS club to get this event off the ground. The volleyball for all tournament has become the cornerstone of social volleyball in Namibia, and that’s where a lot of our players got into contact with volleyball the first time,” he said.

As usual, apart from medals, additional prizes can be won for the best dressed team, the sportiest team and the best organized team, among others.
