11 detainees escape from Oluno Correctional Facility

The police in the Oshana region have reported that 11 detainees escaped from the Oluno Correctional Facility at Ondangwa on Sunday.

The escapees are Namibians and Angolans whose crimes range from housebreaking to rape and stock theft.

Commissioner general Raphael Hamunyela says the escapees, aged between 14 and 17, broke through a zinc ceiling sheet and used blankets to jump the prison walls.

“They were awaiting trial and were at the Oluno Correctional Facility due to accommodation, and they are regarded as minors and cannot be accommodated in the same facilities with adults,” says Hamunyela.

Police investigations continue.
