Woman, niece die in Kuisebmond shack fire

A woman (20) and her niece (2) died in a shack fire at Kuisebmond on Tuesday.

The victims have been identified as Beauty Guidao-Oas (20) and Gloria Guibes (2).

Senior inspector Hilma Shomongula from the Erongo police says the fire broke out in Kilimanjaro Street at 03h00.

“It is alleged that neighbours were awakened by someone screaming from a nearby shack. When they went outside to check, they discovered that the shack was on fire and the person screaming was trapped inside,” the police report reads.

Shomongula says neighbours attempted to break into the hardboard structure to rescue the victims, but the fire was too big and spread to nearby shacks.

The Walvis Bay Fire Brigade was called to the scene and managed to extinguish the blaze.

The police say six shacks were destroyed, affecting 14 people.

Shomongula has confirmed that Guidao-Oas and Guibes died.

Their bodies were transported to the Walvis Bay police mortuary, where post-mortems will be conducted.

The deceased’s next of kin have been informed and police investigations are ongoing.
