A woman accused of dealing in mandrax tablets and cannabis valued at more than N$2.2 million over the past weekend is being held in custody after making a first court appearance following her arrest.
Lena Spido (39) yesterday appeared in the Windhoek Magistrate’s Court in Katutura on charges of dealing in and possession of prohibited dependence-producing drugs and a count of acquiring, possessing or using the proceeds of unlawful activities.
Spido was arrested on Saturday.
The state is alleging that she was dealing in and was in possession of 17 717 methaqualone (mandrax) tablets, valued at about N$2.1 million, and 10.2kg of cannabis, valued at N$102 150, in the Goreangab area of Windhoek on Saturday.
Public prosecutor Ozana Bilic informed magistrate Eliud Nakulonda during Spido’s court appearance that the state is objecting to bail being granted to her, due to the seriousness of the charges against her, because she has a propensity to commit offences, and in the public interest.
Nakulonda remanded Spido in custody.
Her case was postponed to 29 September for a formal bail application.
