SWAPO presidential candidate Hifikepunye Pohamba says the early election results of seagoing personnel and Namibians in foreign countries indicated that Swapo has ‘already won’.
He was speaking at the Kuisebmond Stadium at Walvis Bay, which was packed to the rafters on Saturday during the second-last Swapo rally before this weekend’s presidential and National Assembly elections.’The seafarers and our foreign representatives have given Swapo the confidence through a resounding victory. Through them I see we have won already. And considering this turnout today, also shows that we have won the elections,’ Pohamba said.Rally organisers estimated that there were about 10 000 people in the stadium, with ‘many thousands more not being able to enter the grounds’.’For security reasons, thousands have to remain outside because otherwise we would not be able to manage the crowds. This turnout in Walvis Bay also reflects our support in the rest of Erongo and Namibia,’ said Swapo Party Central Committee member Ben Amadila.’This huge turnout shows the people’s readiness to go vote.’After telling the supporters of all Swapo’s successes since Independence, which include peace, security, socio-economic development, education, health and poverty alleviation, Pohamba said there were enough reasons why everyone should vote for him and his party.’Since Independence there’s been remarkable progress despite the falsehood that our detractors would want you to believe. Some of them would say, ‘Swapo lost their vision’. This is a lie. Swapo’s successes are visible across the country for all to see,’ he said. ‘We will also leave no stone unturned to fulfil our mandate as stipulated in the manifesto and continue addressing our people’s needs.’Pohamba said his first term as president was nearly at an end, but that he was ready and willing to serve another five years.’I am committed. Vote for the future. Vote for me. Vote for Swapo. Let’s aim for a landslide victory. Let’s celebrate on 29 and 30 November the victory of Swapo through all of Namibia,’ he said. The last Swapo rally before the elections took place in Windhoek yesterday.
