Love is in the air this weekend! With Valentine’s Day a few days away, couples out there are gearing up for their yearly traditions. Valentine’s Day is said to be derived from pagan traditions, but in this day and age, many people have turned it into a day to spend time with family or simply celebrate love.
Anything can be a tradition – going on a romantic dinner at a favourite spot in town, cutting up lovely red hearts and decorating the house with the children, or having fun at the movies are only a few things people do to make their day more special.
For Hertha Uushona, it has always been about spending the day with her bae and not necessarily doing certain things just because it’s Valentine’s Day. “We’re going to pretend it’s a normal day, go for a drive outside Windhoek and have a sundowner at River Crossing Lodge.”
Adolf Kaure had another plan in mind, though. For him, it’s all about home sweet home. “I’m going to eat bae’s home cooked meals.”
Like the saying goes, the ways to a man’s heart is through his stomach, right?
When it comes to long distance relationships, things may get a little bit complicated but the next best thing to cuddle up with is the old teddy bear that usually sits on a corner of your bed (or the PlayStation controller for some). However, with a lot of communication, trust and the determination to keep your love alive, a yearly tradition on Valentine’s Day only makes things more romantic than ever.
“Unfortunately, she’s far away, but we communicate about a certain romantic movie we both agree on and start watching it at the same time, after receiving a gift from her of course,” said Johannes Dennis.
Fernandu Chimuco is someone who doesn’t feel he has to deal with V-Day and its drama. Rather, a cool, steady day is in the works for him. “Our tradition is not to have a tradition. Every year should always be different from the year before.”
This just proves that every couple is different – with each having their own thing going on and there is nothing wrong with that!
Single this V-Day? Go on and break the conformities that come with Valentine’s Day and make your own tradition. If that means that you have to read a book, or watch an entire season of anime on Netflix, go for it.
Etuna Hango has always got a plan with his ‘love’. “I spend my whole day with her and we watch series and movies together. I love my bed to the death.”
Whether you’re bae’d up or chilling at home with the fam, perhaps a day with love all around will make all the difference. Happy Valentine’s Day!
