Nust appoints Frednard Gideon as vice chancellor

The Namibia University of Science and Technology (Nust) has appointed Frednard Gideon as its substantive vice chancellor, with effect from the start of August.

The appointment follows on a recruitment process during which Gideon was shortlisted alongside National Commission on Research, Science and Technology chief executive Anicia Peters.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the university said its council unanimously approved the appointment, citing Gideon’s “distinguished academic career, leadership experience, and commitment to higher education excellence”.

Gideon has more than 25 years of experience in academia, including leadership roles in academic and executive management, as well as institutional governance, the university said.

“He has been serving in council for about 14 years and been a member of senate for about 17 years,” the university said.

Gideon holds a PhD in mathematics and multiple qualifications in science and business administration, and as pro-vice chancellor for academic affairs of the University of Namibia is currently overseeing a multi-campus institution with more than 30 000 students.

Gideon succeeds Andrew Nikondo, who has served as acting vice chancellor of Nust since October 2025.
