The Usakos Town Council has engaged NamWater and submitted proposals for a practical settlement, including offsetting about N$1.6 million that the water utility owes the council in rates and taxes.
NamWater last week announced suspension of bulk water supply to the town over its N$18 million debt.
In a press statement issued on Tuesday, the council says it carries about N$36 million in outstanding consumer water debt, including approximately N$12.88 million owed by pensioners, while continuing to provide essential municipal services.
“We also wish to clarify that water rationing affecting Hakhaseb and Erongosig was not caused by its outstanding NamWater account, but by limitations affecting NamWater’s supply infrastructure,” reads the statement.
As part of efforts to strengthen local water security, the council has developed four boreholes and two reservoirs and is proceeding with the installation of 800 prepaid water meters.
The council says it is currently supplying Usakos, Bo-dorp and plot areas through its own water resources, while NamWater supplies Hakhaseb and Erongosig.
The town council says it remains committed to engaging NamWater towards a practical and sustainable settlement and will continue informing residents of developments affecting the town’s water supply.
