Two trucks travelling between Swakopmund and Arandis crashed early on Thursday morning, with at least one of the truck drivers being injured.
According to the police incident report, the two involved vehicles are a fuel truck and a truck transporting sand.
The fuel truck, belonging to Petrosol Otjiwarongo, was travelling from Walvis Bay to Otjiwarongo. The sand truck was travelling in the same direction, transporting sand from the Swakop River.
“When [the trucks] reached the turn off of Namib Lead mine, the truck drivers – both sand and fuel – intended to turn right, however, moved at the same time,” police spokesperson deputy commissioner Kauna Shikwambi says in the report.
The sand truck allegedly hit the rear of the fuel truck, which caught fire.
“The truck was totally destroyed. The driver managed to escape [but] sustained injuries,” Shikwambi says.
The accident occurred on the B2 road approximately 25 kilometres outside of Swakopmund.
Drivers of both trucks were taken to hospital for observation and the police investigation continues, she says.
