Two children aged five and six died after being struck by a vehicle at the Karibib road block on Thursday.
The incident took place at about 15h45 when the two children, along with two others, allegedly ran into the road in an attempt to cross it.
According to the police, the driver (64) of a white double-cab vehicle was travelling from Osino Mine towards Karibib when the children ran onto the road.
“Upon approaching the roadblock, four minors ran into the road to cross it. The driver reportedly tried to avoid colliding with them, but it was too late, resulting in two of the children being struck,” the police say.
They say the two children died at the scene and were transported to Usakos State Mortuary, where they will remain pending post-mortem examinations.
The victims have been identified as Nicodemus Toivo (5) and Megameno Hilalius (6) – both pupils from Karibib.
“The driver is licensed and tested negative for alcohol,” the police say.
They say the children’s next of kin have been informed of the incident and investigations into the incident are continuing.
The case is being investigated as one of culpable homicide.
