Trump appoints John Giordano as US ambassador to Namibia

United States (US) president Donald Trump has announced the appointment of John Giordano as the new US ambassador to Namibia.

Trump made the announcement in a congratulatory message posted to his social media account earlier this week.

“John Giordano, who has done a terrific job as the interim US attorney in New Jersey, will now be nominated as the new ambassador to Namibia,” the president said.

Giordano’s appointment follows the retirement of former ambassador Randy Berry earlier this year. He served in Namibia for less than two years.

Berry’s departure was confirmed by US embassy spokesperson Tiffany Miller, who says he stepped down on 1 January for personal reasons after a distinguished 30-plus-year career with the US government.

He served as the US ambassador to Namibia from February 2023 until December 2024.

During his time in Namibia, Berry worked on strengthening bilateral ties, with a particular focus on development and youth empowerment.

In his farewell message, he expressed a deep appreciation for the “generosity and determination of Namibians”, which he says was clearly demonstrated through the country’s collaborative spirit.

Following Berry’s departure, the embassy had been under the leadership of chargé d’affaires Brandon Hudspeth, until Giordano’s appointment.
