South African actors and real-life couple David Louw and Christel van den Bergh are currently on tour in Namibia to show case their theatre play titled “Trou is nie perdekoop” which translates to marriage is not child’s play.
Their debut performance kicked off on Friday 4 February in Windhoek and will continue to nine other towns in Namibia until 18 February 2022 before they return to South Africa in two weeks.
The duo also played the rugby couple Simon and Renate Greeff in the Kyknet Afrikaans soapie Getroud met Rugby that airs weekly.
The towns they will visit are Gobabis, Aranos, Mariental, Otjiwarongo, Tsumeb, Outjo, Walvisbaai and Swakopmund and is likey to be taken to Australia, Nieu Zealand and England.
Louw said there is also strong interest from people living in Dubai but he has strong views about the treatment of women in that country and will unfortunately not honour this invitation.
The play deals about a young couple in a serious relationship, but while the woman wants to marry the man is not so eager although are very much in love.
During media briefing Louw said the idea is to give viewers relatable content and characters they can identify with.
“Society determines what happens in life, where your children go to school, and what type of car you drive. So this about whether you want to be in a marriage or relationship or whether it is because society says so.”
Meanwhile, Van den Bergh said they hope to help some upcoming actors in Namibia during their home in the country.
She also urged local actors and creatives to find other ways of making money like independent theatre plays rather than depending only on mainstream productions.
“Although it is important to work from the bottom it is important that you know yourself. There are those people who would expect you to just take any job and be grateful for the little money.”
