Toivo Street replaces Krupp Street

THE City of Windhoek yesterday renamed Krupp Street in the Southern Industrial Area to Andimba Toivo ya Toivo Street.

Mayor Matheus Shikongo said the renaming of the street after the former Minister of Prisons and Correctional Services was a token of recognition and appreciation for the contributions he made to the struggle against colonialism. “I strongly believe that as the names of our heroes and leaders are gradually appearing on the street signs around our city, our people will feel a sense of pride. It is a duty and responsibility placed upon us by our history as Namibian people, black or white, to shape our inclusive society and thus ensure that the faces of our cities and towns reflect the mixed cultures of all our people,” Shikongo said.In his acceptance speech Toivo said he was honoured by the gesture.”I am really humbled by this gesture and I feel privileged for this street to be renamed after me, a village boy from Omangundu in Oshikoto Region,” he said.”I strongly believe that as the names of our heroes and leaders are gradually appearing on the street signs around our city, our people will feel a sense of pride. It is a duty and responsibility placed upon us by our history as Namibian people, black or white, to shape our inclusive society and thus ensure that the faces of our cities and towns reflect the mixed cultures of all our people,” Shikongo said.In his acceptance speech Toivo said he was honoured by the gesture.”I am really humbled by this gesture and I feel privileged for this street to be renamed after me, a village boy from Omangundu in Oshikoto Region,” he said.
